hi all Community 1891 0

hi all I've been playing piano for almost a year but I still cant read sheet music propperly. I started out learning how to play and read music so far from websites & videos avalible on the net. I know the basic notes etc and how to read a few chords and I've got songs like twinkel, twinkel little star licked! lol. But when confronted with a propper song I cant read it at all I can play a few tunes ok (your song, virtual insanity, teach me and a few others)but thats only because I learnt them via video tutorials & I wouldnt know how to read the sheet music for them. Can anyone tell me where to start? How did you learn to read music? any sites or books you can recommend? I really want to learn how to play the piano & I started off quiet well learning/practising for the first 5/6 months but I think without being able to read music I will not go any further any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, SJ

I suggest going to a music teacher and get piano lessons if you want to play piano. This seems to be the best and quickest way to learn the piano. For sight reading, just get a giant (and cheap) book of piano solos that are 1-2 grade(s) under what you can read, and just go through all the songs. Playing hands seperatly helps me quite a lot.

Sight reading is a very diffficult thing to do. It may take you about another year or two. But don't give up, you just have to get familiar with the keys and your fingers. Start out small, then build yourself up step by step. If you want to get a piano book, I would suggest one by John Thompson, or the Idiots Guide to Playing Piano. I tried that one and my sight reading went up amazingly.

I took guitar lessons from 8 onwards... and oboe just this school year... piano I was self-taught, but all that meant for reading music was learning bass clef which wasn't difficult.

reading music isnt very hard to figure out and doesnt take that long so you should be fine... you could always take lessons with a teacher but this would obviously cost money... the following is website that 'teaches' you the basics of music and how to read it. i think it is very good.. check it out http://datadragon.com/education/reading/
